Two percentage discounts usually cannot be added together when the second discount applies to the already reduced price. A 20% reduction followed by another 10% reduction saves 28% overall, not 30%. Each percentage is calculated from the price available at its own step.
Calculate each reduction separately
Suppose an item starts at 200. Use the Tolibox discount calculator twice:
- Enter an original price of 200 and a discount of 20%. The first result is 160.
- Enter 160 as the new starting price and a discount of 10%. The second result is 144.
- Subtract 144 from 200. The total saving is 56.
- Divide 56 by 200 and multiply by 100. The combined reduction is 28%.
The second discount saves 16, not 20, because it applies to 160. This is the step that adding the advertised percentages misses.
Check whether the offer actually stacks
A store may exclude sale items from a coupon, apply a maximum saving, or require a minimum basket value. Some offers use a fixed currency deduction instead of a percentage. Read the conditions before assuming that two promotions can be used together.
If you compare the same two uncapped percentage reductions without intermediate rounding, reversing their order gives the same final amount. That shortcut does not automatically apply when a fixed-value coupon, a cap, or rounding rules are involved.
Is an extra 10% off the same as ten percentage points more?
No. An extra reduction applies to a remaining price; percentage points describe a difference between rates.
