To find a discounted price, calculate the saving from the original price, then subtract that saving. A 20% discount on a price of 250 saves 50 and leaves 200 to pay before any separately added charges. The percentage always needs a clear starting price.
Work through one example
Open the Tolibox discount calculator. Enter 250 as Original price and 20 as Discount (%). The result should show a final price of 200 and savings of 50.
The arithmetic is:
- Saving = 250 × 20 ÷ 100 = 50.
- Final price = 250 − 50 = 200.
You can also multiply the original price by the fraction left to pay. After a 20% discount, 80% remains, so 250 × 0.80 gives the same final price.
Compare the checkout total
A product discount is not necessarily a discount on the entire order. Shipping, optional extras, and other charges may be calculated separately. Check the offer's conditions and compare like with like: the same item, quantity, and included charges.
For a useful comparison, imagine another shop offers the same item for 205 with delivery included. If the discounted 200 price adds 15 for delivery, its payable total becomes 215. The larger advertised reduction does not automatically create the cheaper purchase.
Enter the percentage as 20, not 0.20, in a field labeled Discount (%). Use positive prices and a discount between 0 and 100 for an ordinary retail reduction. Round currency amounts at the end of your calculation.
Is 20% off the same as paying 20%?
No. A 20% reduction means paying 80% of the starting price.
What if I only know the old and new prices?
Use the discount percentage calculator to work backward from those two amounts.
