Compare grocery packages by dividing each price by the quantity it contains, after converting both quantities to the same unit. A lower shelf price doesn't necessarily mean a lower unit price. Start with similar products, check the package sizes, and use the price you would actually pay after any applicable offer.
Compare two packages with different sizes
- Open the Tolibox grocery unit price calculator.
- Enter Package A's price, total quantity and unit.
- Enter the corresponding values for Package B.
- Select Calculate and compare the normalized unit prices.
Suppose a 16-ounce package costs $3.20 and a two-pound package costs $5.60. Two pounds contain 32 ounces. Package A costs $0.20 per ounce; Package B costs $0.175 per ounce. Package B's unit price is 12.5% lower, even though its shelf price is higher.
That percentage compares the lower unit price with the higher one. It doesn't mean the larger package costs fewer dollars at checkout.
Why can't ounces always be compared?
Weight ounces and fluid ounces describe different measurements. Don't compare an ounce weight label with a fluid-ounce volume label. This calculator rejects that combination rather than guessing a product's density.
You can compare pounds with grams, or liters with US fluid ounces. The displayed common unit is an ounce of weight, a US fluid ounce, or one item. Pints, quarts and gallons here are US liquid measures, not Imperial measures.

Only if the products suit the same purpose and you'll use the quantity. A larger package that spoils can waste money. For multipacks, enter the total amount across the included containers; for counted products, choose Item / piece on both sides.
Check membership conditions and coupons before entering a discounted price. The tool compares your figures; it doesn't fetch store prices or predict future promotions. It shows unit prices to four decimal places so small differences remain visible, while its comparison uses the underlying values.
